After a weekend trip to Galle, there are many words that may be used to sum up the sights and sounds and feelings of this city. However, at the top of this long list of attributes swirling in my mind, is distinctly the word.. underrated. From a foreigner's perspective, Galle is not an obvious destination on the tourist routes. We hear an abundance of information and helpful tips on many areas of this diverse country, from tea regions, to beaches, to Kandy, to various national parks. However, Galle is a city that we hear little about, and because of this many tourists miss out on this total gem of a place.
Galle is so special because it truly has it all. It is a city steeped in history, and you literally can live it and breathe it in as you wander the fort. There is something for everyone within these fort walls. The tales of the past told from ancient architecture will inspire anyone interested in history, the beautiful stained glass windows and vintage cars are a photographer's dream, it's a mindful shopper's paradise with stores full of goods with artsy and progressive vibes, and finally it's a total foodie place, where the flavors are fresh and intentional too.
Even a day trip to Galle from Colombo would be totally worthwhile, to wander around the fort streets without having to worry about traffic is a breath of fresh air from the capital city, and to spend an evening watching the sunset from high up on the ramparts overlooking pristine ocean will make you want to stick around much longer than you expected.
