Rumassala Sanctuary is situated on Jungle Beach Road Unawatuna, surrounding the legendary hill deeply embedded in the epic “Ramayana '' and this specific piece of land is believed to be a part of the Himalayas. It says during the battle between the Indian King Rama and King Ravana of Lanka, Rama’s brother Luxman was injured and Hanuman was sent to the Himalayas to fetch a herb yet Hanuman has forgotten the exact name of the herb and he has brought a part of the Himalayan Mountain on which the plant was to be found. However part of this mountain has fallen to Unawatuna and formed a new mountain and that's believed to be the mythical Rumassala sanctuary.However even today the nature of the plants in this mythical piece of land found to be different compared to the surrounding areas.Also popular as nature lover’s paradise and good hideout to get yourself away from the busy Galle town.
