A museum exhibiting colonial and modern naval equipment, weapons and underground casement structures built during The World War II. It is located in Ostenburg, a high point overlooking the entrance of the inner harbour of Trincomalee, and was called the most powerfully gunned fort in Ceylon. It got its name for an observation tower built in premises called “Hoods Tower”, which was named after Commander of the East Indies Station Vice-Admiral Sir Samuel Hood.
The museum was established in 1990 and managed and maintained by the Sri Lanka Navy. Some of the weapons (guns & rifles) are well maintained and still in their functional condition. There are many weapons from the colonial period used by the British and an outdoor area with modern naval defence guns including 20MM MIT F2 GOAT guns. About the exhibits are weapons captured from the Tamil Tiger terrorists during the 30 years of civil war, including suicide crafts, rafts and a terrain vehicle used by Charles Anthony.
