Sprawled on a rocky mountain, Sri Sankapala Raja Maha Viharaya boasts an exotic array of old buildings, 14 caves, rock carvings and a landscape of raw beauty. The temple was allegedly built and resided by Giant Pussadewa; a warrior of King Dutugemunu’s army. Giant Pussadewa’s tombstone can also be viewed at the bottom of the rock, about 0.75 miles from the temple.
Vehicles need to be parked at the car park, and a small distance walked. Ensure you are wearing appropriate clothing to the temple, preferably white, with your legs covered. The locale is ideal for a peaceful meditate, owing to its calm and mind-relaxing environment.
