The National Museum of Ratnapura was opened to the public in May 1988, exhibiting a number of historical and zoological artifacts. Originally, the building was the residence of Ehelepola Nilame, a courtier of the Kandyan Kingdom, thus it was called the Ehelepola Walawwa during the ancient period.
Visitors can discover a range of unique exhibits, including medieval weaponry, Ehelepola Nilame’s alleged sword, a Vickers machine gun used in World War I, an ancient three-mould tripod pan and even traditional Kandyan jewellery. In addition, there are life-sized animal sculptures of tigers, elephants and rhinoceroses that supposedly existed in the area.
A ticket needs to be purchased at the entrance. Visiting hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
