The very definition of classical beauty, Batadombalena is an archaeological wonder evident with prehistoric settlements from 8000 years back. The site merits a day’s exploration with fascinating remains of the Balangoda Man; the earliest record of modern humans in South Asia, such as stone antiquities, parts of hunting weapons, parperated beads made from fragments of ostrich shells and skeletal remains.
A few steps before the Batadombalena cave is the Batatotalena Cave (Diva Guhawa). It is claimed that Lord Buddha rested in this cave on His return journey from Adam’s Peak, and thus it is a major pilgrimage site venerated by many devotees.
An exciting and adventurous hike up a jungle-covered hill is needed to reach the cave. Leech protection measures, comfortable footwear and reasonable fitness are essential.
