Polonnaruwa Vatadage is an amazing circular structure built on a stone platform providing shelter and protection to the smaller stupa which is believed to be enshrining the sacred tooth relic or the alms bowl of Gautama Buddha. The 12th-century building consists of amazing rock carvings, Buddha statues and a moonstone “Sandakada Pahana”.
A rock inscription made by King Nishanka Malla suggests that this amazing structure was built by one of his generals under his own supervision, but there are other theories which says that it was built by King Parakramabahu I. Both these kings reigned in the 12th century.
The Vatadage consists of some magnificent rock carvings. The Sandakada Pahana, Guard stones, Balustrade (“Korawak Gala”), Lions, Dwarfs and symmetrical flower patterns. The lion carvings in the Vatadage resemble the Independence Square in Colombo. Inside the Vatadage is a small stupa surrounded by amazingly detailed Buddha statues on the four sides.
