Built by the Dutch in 1706 With a spacious verandah facing the cobblestone laneway of the Matara Forth, the Doric styled Dutch Reformed Church is regarded as the oldest building in the Matara Fort.
The churchyard of the Dutch Reformed Church consists of various gravestones, some dating back to the late 17th century. It suggests that the church may have been there earlier than 1706. It is one of the oldest Protestant churches in Sri Lanka, and is still being used with a capacity of 200 seats. It is also regarded that this is a smaller version of the Galle Fort’s church. Take a look at the inscription at the doorway while you visit the church.
