Built in 1890, Dondra Head Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in Sri Lanka. It is located in the southernmost tip of the island, with the survey benchmarks next to the lighthouse. The cove shaped beach next to the lighthouse is scenic, you can take lovely photographs with the lighthouse.
Managed by the ports authority the lighthouse is well preserved and still in a working condition. It is recorded that all the materials, including the granite rocks, and iron bars.
With 14 windows on its sides, the lighthouse is 49 meters tall, and has seven floors, and contains limited edition lenses from the late 19th century. The lighthouse got new GPS equipment in 2000 and still gives directions to the ships.
