A South Indian style Hindu temple with one of the largest Gopurams in Sri Lanka, decorated with 1008 smaller statues, Sri Muthumariamman Temple is an interesting religious attraction to visit.
The temple was built in 1874, and funded by Nattukkottai Chettiar merchants, a tamil cast from south India who are involved mainly in banking, money lending. The temple underwent severe damages during the anti Tamil riots in July 1983.
The temple hosts an annual Theru Festival during February and March, where the five ceremonial chariots carrying statues of Hindu gods are pulled along by people. During the festival lots of people gather in colourful traditional attire.
