Padeniya Raja Maha Viharaya

This is an amazing temple image house built on top of an uneven rock surface and decorated with a series of carved wooden pillars and a unique frieze of lions around the four sides. Everything within this temple has been decorated with rich wood carvings and colorful paintings.

The temple was built on an elevated ground made on top of an uneven rock surface overlooking a small lake. There are three entrances to the temple and they have fine wood carvings including various creepers and a Makara Thorana (dragon face) welcoming you in. The frieze of lions is a unit decoration of the temple. The roof resembles the wood works of Embekke Devalaya.
