International Buddhist Museum

Welcomed by a 16 feet high replica of the Saranath Buddha Statue, the International Buddhist Museum is home to a superb collection of exhibits from various Buddhist nations. Under the directions of the Dalada Maligawa, the museum was established to build awareness and interest in various Buddhist cultures.

The museum has sections for countries which practise Buddhism, including Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indoneesia, Korea, Japan and China. The museum has sections for these countries, and have replicas of significant attractions.

The colonial building housing the museum was originally the former Kandy Kachcheri Building. The British has constructed this on the land where Kandyan King Wimaladharmasuriya’s palace was.

It takes about 2 hours to go through all the sections of the museum.
