An amazing temple built in a man made cave, with beautiful frescoes which describes the life of Buddha and Jataka stories. The temple was built in 1771 by Rajadhi Rajasinha, brother of King Kirti Sri Rajasinha. After ascending to the throne Rajadhi Rajasinha made his teacher and chief advisor Moratota Dhammakkanda Maha Nayaka Thera as the chief incumbent of the temple.
The temple is built between two large slabs of rocks, hence it has got its name “Degaldoruwa”. The frescoes in the temple demonstrate the distinctive features of Kandyan era paintings and colours. The temple houses an impressive reclining Buddha statue.
It is surely a hidden place, but an interesting place to visit to enjoy Kandyan era arts. There are no tickets needed to visit the temple.
You are not allowed to take photographs with flashers inside the temple, and note that you will have to wear appropriate clothing when you visit.
