The National Maritime Museum is located above the Old Gate of the Galle Fort. The museum was badly affected in the 2004 tsunami yet with the help of Netherland government aids , the museum was re-constructed and opened for visitors.
This special marine museum is the only museum that you can get a good knowledge of marine biology and life-srtyles of fishing communities.
The museum showcases the watercrafts used in passenger transport, traditional lifestyle of fishing communities depicted using replicas ,marine ecosystems and their flora and fauna, models of mangroves, seashore plants, turtles, seabirds ,specimens of corals, marine shells and a large skeleton of a Whale mounted in the roof.
