Sri Lanka Air Force Museum

The Air Force Museum or Sri Lanka was established in 1993 with the idea of preserving and depicting the Aviation History of the Sri Lanka Air Force. The museum is the only national museum dedicated to the field of aviation and the history of Sri Lanka Air Force.

Sri Lanka Air Force was established on 2nd March 1951, and was called The Royal Ceylon Air Force. In the beginning it had no aircrafts and the early recruits only had to do PT and Drill routines. The first aircrafts were a batch of four chipmunks which arrived in Ceylon in October 1950. Over the years the Sri Lanka Airforce was developed into a 38, 000 personnel with owning a fleet of 75 aircrafts.

The museum was established in 1993 as the Aircraft Preservation and Storage unit at the Air Force Base Ratmalana. The present modernised form of the museum was initiated by Air Chief Marshal Harry Goonatilake, 12th Commander of the Air Force, as a special project in 2008.

The museum exhibits a collection of vintage aircrafts used by SLAF since its early days, and some of these aircrafts have been restored to flying condition by a dedicated team of engineers and technicians. There are four hangars, an outdoor area, and a knowledge hub within the museum.

The museum will be a great experience for military & aviation enthusiasts, being located in Ratmalana the museum is about 16 Kms away from the center of Colombo.

The museum is open on all days except Monday and Public holidays from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
