If you are looking to spend time in a modern, high end, Sri Lankan shopping complex look no further that the Arcade Independence Square.
The shopping mall has a number of high-end eateries, some finest well known Sri Lankan tea brands, like Dilmah and Mlesna. There are a collection of clothing outlets, electronic outlets, opticians, and jewelry shops including Levis, Nike, Charles and Keith, Titan. The main building was built in 1889, and served as the Jawatta Lunatic Asylum. It was renovated in 2012 under the Urban Development Authority (UDA) preserving the colonial architecture. It is considered to be one of the most important refurbishment projects completed in the recent history by the Defence Ministry and the UDA.
Inside the building is mostly white, with wooden panels, there are long benches where you can sit and hangout. Outside there is a green lawn with cane furniture for a relaxing evening. Just to the north of the complex is the Independence Square which is another great place to hangout, with its historical and architectural value.
