This 4th-century Buddha statue is regarded as one of the finest creations by ancient Sinhalese. The 7 feet 3 inch tall statue was carved out of a dolomite marble and depicts the Samadhi (meditation) posture of Buddha. It was discovered that there have been four of these samadhi statues around a bodhi three in Mahamewna, however this is the only one which has survived.
The statue was located about 300 meters away from the Kuttam Pokuna and must have been respected by the Bhikkus of Abhayagiri Monastery. It is located in a truly tranquil place.
You will be expected to wear appropriate clothing and walk barefooted when visiting the Samadhi Statue.
