Tamil folklore suggests that this is the place where Skanda Kumara (Kataragama Deviyo) with his wife Valli Amma reached the shores of Sri Lanka in a golden boat, and the boat then turned into a rock. Later a shrine was built and dedicated to god Kataragama. The main shrine is surrounded by smaller shrines dedicated to Hindu deities.
There are two main hillocks called Swamimalai and Vallimalai with shrines dedicated to Velaswami and Valli Amma the two wives of god Kataragama. The hillocks have naturally formed ponds which look amazing during the sun sets. The shrines are just about 100 meters from the beach and from the Valli Amman shrine you can see panoramic views of the ocean.
