After being casted to the sea as sacrifice to save the island from the disasters caused by a tsunami this is where princess Viharamaha Devi landed ashore. Later King Kavan Tissa of Ruhuna built this temple in the 2nd-century BC to mark the place.
There is some controversy between Muhudu Maha Viharaya and Kirinda Raja Maha Viharaya over the place where Viharamaha Devi landed. However records of Rajavaliya says that she landed in Pottuvil where Muhudu Maha Viharaya is built.
The temple has ruins of ancient stupas, seema malaka, monks residence and statues of Buddha and gods which dates back to the 2nd-century BC. The temple welcomes you with a series of statues of Buddhist monks walking in a line. You can visit the temple anytime and no tickets required, but the monks would welcome donations or alms.
Be sure to wear appropriate clothing, and avoid day time as you would have to walk barefooted in the hot sun.
