Kudumbigala

Bordering Kumana National Park and the Indian Ocean Kudumbigala sanctuary is an amazing untouched area. Within the sanctuary is a Buddhist monastery where ascetic Buddhist monks meditate. The rocky mountain within the thick jungle offers panoramic views of the ocean.

The sanctuary spreads across an area of 4,403 hectares, and lies untouched with natural forests, birds and wildlife. The monastery in the caves is believed to be built in the 3rd-century BC by King Devanam Piya Tissa of Anuradhapura, and is still being used. One of the caves still houses an ancient samadhi statue of Buddha.

There are steps built to climb up to the highest point of the Kudumbigala Rock, but it might require a lot of energy. Note that it could be blistering hot during mid day. However when you reach the top it offers heavenly views of the surrounding areas.

Kudumbigala is about 16 kilometers away from Arugam Bay, you can take a Tuk Tuk or a private car to go to the monastery.
