The historic buddhist temple, Madukanda Vihara, is located in Madukanda Village, which was the birthplace of Nandimithra, a giant warrior of King Dutugemunu’s army. During the reign of King Kirthi Sri Meghavarna, the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha was brought to Sri Lanka by Prince Dantha and Princess Hemamala. It is believed that the 4th resting point of the Tooth Relic on its journey, from Mullaitivu to Anuradhapura, was at Madukanda Village.
Today, visitors are able to observe exquisite craftsmanship of the bygone era, in the form of intricate carvings made on granite stepping stones. There is also an image house, guard stones and some ancient ruins, which have been preserved by the archaeological department overtime. The temple offers free lodging and basic amenities to those visiting the Madukanda Vihara. Note that you are expected to wear appropriate clothing, preferably white.
