An amazing raised-up area built in the 11th and 12th centuries under the reigns of King Vijayabahu I, Parakramabahu I and Nishanka Malla. Many important ancient monuments protecting the sacred tooth relic were built in this area.
When you reach the steps of the Dalada Maluwa, take notice of a stone slab with carvings of a Buddhist monk, a crow and a dog. It believed that this is to inform that whoever acts disrespectfully in the area will be born as either a dog or a crow in their next births.
The area is a complex of amazing ancient buildings.
