Pothgul Viharaya sits on top of a lofty hill, with 450 stairs that need to be ascended. The cave temple was a place of worship since the 1st century BC, when it was established by King Walagamba, and later renovated by King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe. Housed in the cave is a 40 foot tall Reclining Buddha statue, beautiful wall paintings and sculptures of deities that all belong to the temple’s fascinating history. The religious ambiance and faultless scenery is definitely a marvel.
