Set in the southern coast of Mannar Island, the Old Mannar Lighthouse (Urumalai Lighthouse) is located in the village of Urumalai. The ancient lighthouse was supposedly built between the period 1850-1900 and is the only metal lighthouse available in Sri Lanka.
Supported by 7 long iron pillars, it is constructed entirely out of metal, contradicting the usual stone-built lighthouses. The 25-30 meter tall lighthouse is believed to have used oil or gas to light up the fire, which was used as a navigation light to guide ships at sea. The lighthouse lies within a Navy base, so permission is required to get a closer look.
