Murikandy Pillayar Shrine is a small Hindu temple located amidst the Murikandy village, in Kilinochchi. The kovil is devoted to the great God Ganesh, the god of good fortune. The name Murikandy Pillayar Shrine is derived from the Tamil words; Muri - meaning break, Kandy - a city in Sri Lanka, and Pillayar - the God who eliminates obstacles. Thereby, on the journey to and from Jaffna, the kovil is venerated by many as it is claimed that it will remove all obstacles throughout the trip.
