Sinhalese people speak Sinhala as their mother tongue, the Tamil people speak Tamil while English is widely spoken. Sinhala is spoken by about 17 million people in Sri Lanka, more than 14 million of whom are native speakers.
There are four official religions in Sri Lanka and every single one of them is celebrated in its own right. Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim and Christian holidays are all public holidays. Christmas, for example, is celebrated by everyone.
